Berwick's coastguard rescue team has issued safety advice for people near the coast as Storm Boelo brings severe weather to the North East this weekend. The Met Office has placed Berwick within an amber weather alert, which is in force from tomorrow and indicates a risk to life from strong winds.
The warning states: "The strongest winds from Storm Boelo are expected from Saturday evening and extend eastwards through Sunday." The rest of the North East is under a less intense yellow warning for wind, indicating a 25-50% chance of significant impact. The yellow warning covers all of mainland Scotland, Northern Ireland, and areas as far south as Manchester and Liverpool.
Coastguard warning and advice
In response to the forecast, the coastguard team released a statement for people near the coast in affected areas. The coastguard said: "Severe weather is expected across Northumberland this weekend, with strong westerly winds, heavy rain and potentially very rough seas. The Met Office has issued a weather warning for the area, with gusts potentially reaching 70–80mph in exposed coastal locations."
The coastguard added: "We’re asking everyone to take extra care around the coast and please follow our advice below." The advice includes never turning your back on the sea, keeping away from exposed rocks, harbour walls, piers and cliff edges, and not risking safety for storm photos or videos. Dog owners are urged to keep pets under close control, and people should consider whether journeys are necessary as coastal roads may be affected by flooding, debris and wave overtopping.
Additional guidance from RNLI Seahouses
RNLI Seahouses has also issued advice for those heading along the coastline during the weather. The guidance includes checking the forecast before setting off, keeping distance from the water's edge, avoiding exposed cliffs and slippery rocks, and keeping dogs on leads and children close. It also reminds people to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they see someone in danger, and not to enter the water themselves.
Berwick Coastguard rescue team asks people to "Please stay safe this weekend and respect the power of the sea." It reminded people: "If you see someone in difficulty along the coast, cliffs, or in the water: Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
