BBC Weather: October Temperatures to Plummet, Coldest Night of Autumn Arrives
BBC Weather: Coldest Night of Autumn Arrives as Temperatures Plummet

BBC Weather has said the coldest night of autumn has arrived this week, with temperatures set to drop "significantly" across the UK.

The forecaster said it will finally start to feel colder after a period of mild and sunny weather conditions given the time of year.

Coldest night so far

In an update published on Wednesday, October 7, BBC Weather said the coldest night of autumn has arrived this week. The verdict said: "After a spell of unusually warm weather, temperatures across the UK are set to tumble with the coldest night of autumn so far arriving by midweek."

Wednesday night brought the first frost of the season to some places, as colder air continues to arrive from the Arctic. BBC said: "In some areas, minimum temperatures could be just a degree or two above freezing by dawn."

Although temperatures increase throughout the day, it has been a chilly start to the day for many. Temperatures are "unseasonably low", with the coolest areas in Scotland and north eastern England. Some places saw between 3C and 9C this morning.

Rain on the way

Along with the plummeting temperatures, some much-needed rainfall is on the way for England and Wales. BBC Weather shared its Thursday, October 8, forecast which will be "changeable and cooler".

It said: "Thursday will be largely dry with some sunshine in most areas, but the north-west will cloud over and become wet and windy later with some rather heavy rain developing. Rain will spread across most of the rest of the UK throughout Thursday evening and night as winds increase."

In its outlook for Liverpool today, BBC Weather said: "This morning will begin dry with plenty of sunshine. In the afternoon it will become overcast, and it will turn wet and windy by the evening as heavy rain moves in from the west. Staying unsettled overnight as outbreaks of heavy rain push in from the west, these blustery and persistent at times."

October verdict

In its long range forecast, BBC Weather said northern UK should be wetter than the south towards the end of October. Temperatures are likely to be a little above average overall.

It is possible that high pressure will build, which will lead to drier conditions for much of the UK but with chillier nights and mornings, and chances of fog patches.

BBC said: "Temperatures are more likely to be close to or a little above normal than below but with further potentially chilly and foggy nights when conditions are calm enough. However, there is no sign yet of any set up that might lead to a risk of an early cold Arctic outbreak."

The forecaster said it will keep its website updated for more information about its November forecast.
