The Met Office has issued a 13-hour yellow warning for thunderstorms covering Merseyside, with heavy showers, thunder and lightning expected from 11am to midnight on Sunday (August 30).
The national forecaster predicts heavy rain will begin to fall on Liverpool around midday, lasting into the early afternoon, with sunny spells and showers from 3pm. Dense clouds will gather again in the early evening, followed by heavy rain. The yellow warning covers most of England, with only the South East and East Anglia spared.
Impact on travel and power
Driving conditions will likely be affected by spray, standing water or hail, and there could be some damage to buildings from lightning strikes. Delays to rail services are possible, and there may be short-term loss of power and other services.
The Met Office added that flooding of “a few homes and businesses” is possible. Separate yellow weather warnings for thunderstorms cover Northern Ireland and Scotland between 11am and 9pm.

In a statement, the Met Office said: “Showers will become widespread, heavy and thundery later Sunday morning, lasting through the afternoon and into Sunday evening.
“Whilst some areas may miss the heaviest showers, where they do occur, 10-15 mm of rain is possible in an hour or so, with 25-35 mm possible in several hours, Lightning and hail will be additional hazards.
“Heaviest of the showers will ease from the west through the evening.”
