Vigil season 3 filming locations: Svalbard and Glasgow (30.08.2026)

BBC One's Vigil returns for a third season on Sunday, August 30, at 9pm, with the majority of filming taking place in Svalbard, a remote archipelago between Norway and the North Pole, within the Arctic Circle. The cast and crew also returned to Scotland, where much of the series is filmed in and around Glasgow.

The new season follows DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) as they enjoy family life with her teenage daughter and their young son. However, the pair are separated once again when an investigation into a British soldier being fatally shot abroad demands their urgent attention.

Freezing conditions on set

Rose Leslie described the experience of filming in Svalbard as "otherworldly," saying: "I've never been to a place where I felt so isolated. I thought it was magical." She also detailed the cold, explaining: "For the screens they look warm, the puffer jackets are not as insulated as you wish them to be."

Leslie added: "And you have the crew with their bobble hats and gloves and they're USB socks that warm up. There were days when we were cold but it was a magic bonding experience that we all got to be on top of this mountain, north of the world and do something we enjoyed."

Return to Scotland

In addition to Svalbard, filming took place in Scotland, where Amy and Kirsten live. The team was spotted shooting in areas of Glasgow including the West End and West Princes Street.
