UK's Best-Selling Cars Ranked: Nissan Qashqai Tops List

The Nissan Qashqai has been ranked as the best car to drive among the UK's five best-selling models of 2026, according to ReachPlc journalist Christopher Sharp, who tested all five. The Ford Puma leads in sales with 33,173 units, followed by the Kia Sportage (29,033), Jaecoo 7 (26,549), Nissan Qashqai (26,327), and Vauxhall Corsa (20,796), based on SMMT registration figures.

Sharp's Ranking of the Top Five

Sharp placed the Nissan Qashqai first, praising its regenerative braking system, quieter ride, and stability in corners thanks to its longer wheelbase. He noted the interior felt a bit cheap and the rear seats were cramped with four adults, but overall it was "more engaging to drive" than the Kia Sportage, which took second place.

The Kia Sportage scored 7.5/10, with Sharp appreciating its mix of buttons and touchscreens, inoffensive handling, and quiet motorway ride. However, he found the regenerative braking overly sensitive on hills and questioned the need for a sport mode in family cars.

The Vauxhall Corsa came third with a 7/10 rating. Sharp liked its steering feel, light weight, and punchy hybrid system, but deducted marks for wind and road noise at motorway speeds and sensitivity to road crowns. He suggested a used MINI Clubman as an alternative for families.

In fourth place, the Jaecoo 7 scored 6/10. Sharp compared it to a facelifted Mk1 Land Rover Freelander, noting it was better than other Chinese cars but still had vague steering and a cheap interior. He said it beat the Puma because it was less of a disappointment.

The Ford Puma ranked last with a 5/10. Sharp criticised the touchscreen-heavy infotainment, square steering wheel, poor visibility, and body roll, calling it a "Ford Fiesta on stilts" and questioning the £30k price tag. He welcomed reports of a potential Fiesta return.

Sales Figures and Prices

The SMMT's registration data shows the Ford Puma as the top seller, but Sharp's rankings highlight that popularity doesn't always equate to driving quality. Prices for the tested cars range from £20,590 for the Corsa to £31,395 for the Sportage.
