A travel enthusiast who recently moved to the UK has declared Newcastle Europe's 'most underrated city' after falling in love with the North East destination.
Valdemar, a European vlogger who posts as @valdermaryes, shared a video showcasing many of the city's best spots, including the approach to Grey's Monument, the top of Dean Street and the High Level Bridge. The footage, which has gathered many likes on Instagram in a matter of days, was soundtracked with emotive music and captioned: 'I've found Europe's most underrated city.'
Locals react warmly to the tribute
The glowing verdict has gone down a storm with locals, who reacted fondly to the video. One follower replied: 'Absolutely! I have just been there and I was very impressed. People are wonderful. Is an amazing place.' Another, who is about to move to the city, wrote: 'I'm moving to Newcastle in 3 weeks, i'm so excited.'
A proud Geordie responded: 'A unique place with unique people. No where like it on earth. Proud to be a Geordie.' An adopted Geordie added: 'I moved to Newcastle as a student 43 years ago next month and have never left! Beautiful city.'
Filming despite grey skies
Although the sun did not come out for Valdemar's visit at the end of a summer that saw Newcastle bathed in boiling hot conditions, the city still looked majestic in his footage, particularly the sight of Grey's Monument and the snapshots of the River Tyne and its famous bridges.
The video serves as a visual love letter to Tyneside, highlighting the magic of Newcastle when it comes alive, much like other major events in the region such as Radio 1's Big Weekend in Sunderland and Lumiere in Durham.
