Ayr, once named Scotland's worst seaside town, is actually perfect for a day out, with its stunning beach and attractions for all ages. The coastal town in South Ayrshire was revealed as the least popular seaside resort in the country in a national survey by consumer watchdog Which?, based on responses from around 4,000 holidaymakers. Ayr earned a 'destination score' of just 51 out of 100, reflecting visitor satisfaction and the likelihood of participants to recommend the town.
Ayr Beach and scenic views
Despite the poor survey showing, Ayr is definitely worth a day trip. The most famous beauty spot is Ayr Beach, a long stretch of sand ideal for picnics and building sandcastles, with spectacular views across the water to Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. The beach is backed by a promenade and a colourful play park, just a short walk from the town centre.
Historic landmarks and family fun
Beyond the beach, Ayr offers plenty to explore. The Belleisle Conservatory, with a history dating back to 1879, is home to more than 50 species of colourful plants and is run by volunteers. Rozelle Estate features mature woodlands and an ornamental pond, with the Rozelle Tearoom for refreshments.
For families, the Golden Disc Fun Centre is a highlight, offering go-karting, bowling, arcade games, and ice cream. Ayr's standout features make it a worthwhile destination despite its 'worst seaside town' label.
