A scenic 31-mile train journey from Machynlleth to Pwllheli in Wales has been named one of the best in the UK by Conde Nast Traveller. The route, which takes around two hours and 12 minutes, offers views of mountains, beaches, and forests as it travels through Snowdonia National Park.
The track follows the River Dyfi before opening onto the Cardigan Bay coast, with sandy beaches and dunes. Return fares can cost less than £20, and with a railcard, prices can drop to around £13.99.
The journey includes 25 stops, such as Dovey Junction, described as the most isolated station in Wales, and the seaside town of Barmouth. There are no first-class carriages, so passengers are advised to bring their own picnic.
From London, the journey to Machynlleth takes around three hours and 52 minutes by train via Birmingham, with single fares from £37.20. Driving takes approximately four hours and 47 minutes.
Machynlleth itself offers museums, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and the annual Machynlleth Comedy Festival, making it a worthwhile stop before or after the train ride.
