A 420-mile Scotland autumn road trip, outlined by travel website Let's Explore The UK, takes travellers from Edinburgh up into the Scottish Highlands and back down the west coast, with stops at castles, glens and lochs.
Route starts in Edinburgh
Starting in Edinburgh, visitors can take in the sights from Edinburgh Castle and stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town. Travellers can also see Princes Street Gardens as the trees take on an autumnal tone.
From there, the route heads up to Perthshire to explore Drummond Castle, Lady Mary's Walk and The Hermitage. These stops offer centuries of history, waterfalls and walks under a canopy of golden leaves.
Highlands and historic castles
Road trippers then travel up into the Highlands, with stops at Pitlochry, the Cairngorms National Park and Ballindalloch Castle in Banffshire. Built in 1546, Ballindalloch Castle is situated on the banks of the River Avon and is known as the "pearl of the North".
The route then takes travellers back down the west of the Scottish Highlands, with a stop at the Glenfinnan Viaduct, where they may see the Jacobite train - the real-life version of the Hogwarts Express - travel by. Stops also include the glacial valley of Glencoe, and the trip finishes at Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
