Ryanair is to scrap its only direct route between the UK and Bremen, severing a key link to the historic German city and removing around 500,000 seats from its network.
The budget airline will cease flights from London Stansted to Bremen from April 2027, with tickets currently available until March 27 of that year. The route, which has offered fares from as little as £15, is currently the only direct connection between the UK and the northern German destination.
Impact on travellers
The move means British travellers heading to Bremen, renowned for its Gothic architecture and fairytale charm, will be forced to travel via connecting flights, according to The Express.
It comes as part of a wider retrenchment in Germany, where Ryanair has already announced plans to cut 24 routes, resulting in the loss of 800,000 seats. The changes will impact nine airports.
Affected cities and airports
Significant cities and well-loved tourist destinations affected include:
- Berlin
- Hamburg
- Memmingen
- Baden-Württemberg
- Cologne
- Frankfurt-Hahn
- Dortmund
- Dresden
- Leipzig
Broader cuts in Germany
This April, Ryanair confirmed it would slash its Berlin flight programme by half. Chief Executive Eddie Wilson declared last August that Germany's aviation sector is "broken and needs an urgent fix."
"As a result of these high government taxes/fees (the highest in Europe), and Lufthansa's high-fare monopoly, German citizens/visitors now pay the highest air fares in Europe," he said.
