The date for this year's Christmas lights switch-on in Newcastle city centre has been confirmed as Thursday, November 12, 2026. The event, which traditionally draws large crowds and surprise star guests, is seen as the curtain raiser for the city's seasonal festivities.
Past Celebrities and No Word on This Year's Guests
Over the years, the honour of flicking the switch has been given to Brit Award winner Sam Fender, Newcastle United legends Alan Shearer and Sir Bobby Robson, as well as favourites from the Theatre Royal panto and local radio duo Steve and Karen. As of the announcement, there has been no word on who will be involved this year.
Christmas Market and Family Village Plans
The switch-on arrives a week before the opening of the 2026 Newcastle Christmas Market. The market will once again take over various locations in the city, including Monument, Nelson Street, and Old Eldon Square, which will again be home to the Family Village.
Cllr Rob Austin, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Youth Services at Newcastle City Council, said: "The success of last year's Christmas programme shows just how much these events mean to people in Newcastle and beyond.
"Christmas provides a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the city's culture, support local businesses and showcase Newcastle to visitors from across the UK. At the same time, it is essential that our festive programme remains welcoming, accessible and enjoyable for local people."
He added: "Whether it's attending the Christmas Lights Switch-On, visiting the market with family and friends, or supporting local traders, we want everyone to feel part of the celebrations. We're looking forward to building on last year's success and delivering another memorable Christmas for the city."
