Roarty paid £476.40 for two first-class tickets. When his train was delayed by 90 minutes, he qualified for compensation covering the entire cost, effectively making the journey free. The Delay Repay scheme reimburses passengers for significant delays or cancellations, regardless of the cause.
However, experts warn the strategy is risky. Compensation depends on actual departure and arrival times, which vary by operator.
