Holkham named top UK autumn getaway with golden beach

Holkham, a picturesque village in North Norfolk, has been named among the top UK destinations for an autumn escape, offering miles of golden sand at low tide, a pine forest, and the 18th-century Holkham Hall. The recommendation comes from Condé Nast Traveller, which featured the village as part of its list of top destinations to experience this autumn across the UK.

Beach and natural attractions

Holkham is a compact village situated along Norfolk's stunning coastline, renowned for its nature reserve, golden beach, pine woodland, and magnificent stately home. Visitors to the region can spend time at Holkham Beach, described as the crown jewel of the North Norfolk Coast and among the most pristine sandy stretches nationwide.

The beach, which welcomes dogs, horses, and families, extends for miles during low tide and is bordered by a vast pine forest. During a crisp autumn afternoon, visitors may find themselves entirely alone across the seemingly endless sands. Beachgoers have praised it as "beautiful" and "clean" on Tripadvisor.

Visitor experiences

One visitor, Marie, wrote: "Fabulous beach with miles of beautiful golden sand. Unfortunately we weren't very lucky with the weather when we visited, but it meant the beach was very quiet and we walked for around three miles and only met other people when returning to the car park." She added: "We could hear lots of jets circling overhead, but the cloud base was too low to see any of the action. We'll definitely return on a sunny day."

Another visitor, Steve Grant, said: "We parked up on a car park in town and walked along the estuary to the beach. The walk was pleasant and enjoyable. The beach however was excellent. I loved all the multi-coloured beach huts. Worth the effort to get there!"

History and nearby attractions

Following an invigorating coastal walk, visitors can explore Holkham's captivating heritage at the 18th-century Holkham Hall. Regarded as among England's most outstanding examples of Palladian revival architecture, Holkham Hall is an impressive stately home situated within 25,000 acres of parkland and farmland.

The extensive estate and pristine gardens are genuinely spectacular. Beyond discovering the property's fascinating past, guests will encounter original paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (amongst others) and can enjoy refreshments at the estate's Courtyard Café.

Travelling further up the coastline, holidaymakers can explore the charming town of Wells-next-the-Sea. The attractive town sits between Holkham Beach and Blakeney Point and is particularly renowned for its Georgian Square, stunning quayside vistas, and the Lifeboat Horse; a sculpture constructed from steel bars and whisky barrels situated in the harbour. The shoreline is somewhat gentler than Holkham Beach and features a line of vibrant beach huts elevated on stilts.
