Flight Attendant's Urgent Warning: Why You Should Never Use This Common Item on Planes
Flight attendant's urgent warning about travel pillows

An experienced flight attendant has issued a stark warning to passengers about a common travel item that could be causing more harm than good during flights.

The Hidden Danger in Your Carry-On

While many travellers swear by their trusty travel pillows for long-haul flights, one cabin crew member is urging people to reconsider this popular accessory. "Most people don't realise how unhygienic these pillows can become," explains the flight attendant, who chose to remain anonymous.

Bacterial Breeding Ground

The main issue lies in how frequently these pillows are used without proper cleaning. "Passengers will use the same pillow for multiple flights, often storing it in seat pockets where countless others have placed used tissues, dirty shoes and food wrappers," the professional reveals.

Research shows that airplane seat pockets can harbour more bacteria than toilet flush buttons, making them one of the least hygienic places to store personal items.

Healthier Alternatives

Instead of traditional travel pillows, the flight attendant recommends:

  • Using a clean scarf or jacket rolled up for neck support
  • Opting for disposable pillow covers that can be discarded after use
  • Choosing inflatable pillows that are easier to clean between flights

Other Overlooked Travel Hygiene Tips

The cabin crew member also shared additional advice for staying healthy while flying:

  1. Always wipe down tray tables with antibacterial wipes
  2. Avoid walking barefoot in the cabin
  3. Use hand sanitiser after touching overhead bins
  4. Never place food directly on tray tables

"People would be shocked if they knew how rarely some areas of the plane get properly cleaned between flights," the attendant added. "Taking simple precautions can make all the difference to your health when travelling."
