A flight attendant has warned travellers against wearing certain types of clothing on planes, saying that while they may seem comfortable at first, they can quickly become problematic when rushing to catch a flight.
Sharing advice on TikTok, the attendant, known as Sille, stressed that her tips were not meant to criticise anyone's fashion choices, but to ensure passengers remain safe from entering the airport to arriving at their destination. She wrote: "I see this on almost every flight, and I promise it's not a judgment. Your feet and body will thank you," as she detailed the items she would "skip" when travelling.
Footwear and clothing to avoid
Among the most hazardous footwear choices on a plane are flip-flops. She wrote: "Flip-flops. Feet swell, cabins get cold. And imagine running to your gate in flip flops."
She also cautioned against overly tight jeans, noting that "your body swells at altitude," which could leave passengers feeling incredibly uncomfortable, especially if paired with a crop top. Shorts and crop tops were also discouraged, as she said: "First of all, the aircon is brutal. Secondly, you don't ever want your naked skin near those seats."
Layering recommended
Relying on a single thin layer was also flagged as far from ideal, as "planes can be freezing, even to hot destinations," meaning passengers should pack at least a jacket or jumper to stay warm.
Instead, she recommended wearing "something comfy, covered and in layers," reiterating that she "works on planes so you don't have to learn this the hard way."
Reaction from travellers
In the comments, one person wrote: "Totally agree!!! Flip flops and Crocs should be banned from flights," adding they are "not appropriate footwear." Another defended the footwear, saying: "I always wear flip flops, BUT I have specific aeroplane socks that I wear on the plane, except to the bathroom, a different pair of flip flops go on for that, and then they get put in the trash. They are throwaway ones."
A third commented: "People wear flip flops to make it easier at security, but honestly, that's so disgusting! I can't imagine my bare feet touching those floors. Always socks and sneakers when I fly!"
Others shared additional pet peeves, with one user writing: "Also, stop wearing strong perfumes when flying. It can trigger allergies, migraines, and respiratory issues in a confined cabin space. Wear perfume or cologne when you're outside the plane." Another traveller revealed they opt for "linen trousers with elastic waistband, a vest top and a long shirt for layer, but I do wear sandals."
