Travel Expert Urges Middle East Travellers to Prepare Emergency Grab Bags

Travel expert Ash Bhardwaj has issued urgent advice for people currently in conflict-affected areas of the Middle East, urging them to prepare emergency "grab bags" containing essential items that can be quickly taken during sudden evacuations or emergencies.

Essential Items for Emergency Preparedness

Speaking on a recent episode of BBC Morning Live, Bhardwaj emphasized that having a prepared grab bag can significantly reduce panic and chaos during emergency situations. "One of the best things you can always do is just make sure you have a grab bag," he stated. "So, if you have to move quickly, you've got your essentials with you."

While the contents may vary depending on individual circumstances, Bhardwaj highlighted several universal items that should be included:

  • Passports and essential travel documents
  • Printed travel insurance documents
  • Essential medications and medical supplies
  • For families with children: changes of underwear, t-shirts, and snacks
  • For infants: sufficient formula or milk for 48 to 72 hours

Practical Preparation Reduces Panic

"This isn't to scare you, it's just so that you have actually thought everything through and it relaxes you," Bhardwaj explained, noting that advance preparation helps people remain calm during crises. He further advised travellers to familiarize themselves with emergency procedures at their accommodations by speaking with hotel staff about emergency exits and safety protocols.

The broadcaster reinforced this message, suggesting people should "plan for when the worst might happen" rather than waiting until emergencies occur.

Current Travel Advisory Context

This advice comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following extensive strikes by the US and Israel on February 28, 2026, which resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The conflict has created significant travel disruption throughout the Gulf region, particularly affecting Dubai.

As of March 5, 2026, the UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the United Arab Emirates, with other parts of the Middle East and surrounding areas also listed as completely or partially unsafe for travel.

Airline Operations Amid Conflict

In response to the ongoing situation, Dubai's Emirates Airline announced on March 5 that it would operate over 100 flights on March 5 and 6 from Dubai. The airline stated it would "continue to gradually build back its flying schedule, subject to airspace availability and all operational requirements being met," while emphasizing that "safety is always our top priority."

The conflict has sparked widespread travel chaos throughout the Gulf region, with Dubai experiencing particular disruption due to retaliatory actions. Travellers are advised to stay informed about the latest developments and maintain emergency preparedness measures as the situation continues to evolve.
