A British couple’s much-anticipated holiday took a bizarre turn when they arrived at their AirBnB rental, only to find their so-called 'bedroom' was barely larger than a cupboard.
The pair, who had booked the accommodation for a weekend getaway, were stunned to discover the sleeping area was a tiny, windowless space with just enough room for a single bed—wedged between a washing machine and a fridge.
"We couldn’t believe our eyes"
"We opened the door expecting a proper bedroom, but it was literally a storage room with a mattress squeezed in," the couple told reporters. "There wasn’t even space to stand up properly."
Photos of the 'room' quickly went viral, sparking outrage among social media users. Many compared it to Harry Potter’s infamous cupboard under the stairs.
AirBnB responds
After the couple complained, AirBnB issued a full refund and removed the listing. A spokesperson stated: "We have zero tolerance for misleading listings and have taken action against the host."
Travel experts are now urging holidaymakers to scrutinise rental photos carefully and read reviews before booking.
How to avoid a holiday let disaster
- Always check multiple photos of the property
- Read recent guest reviews for red flags
- Message the host with specific questions before booking
- Look for verified listings with Superhost status
The couple have since found alternative accommodation but say the experience has put them off budget rentals for good.
