Castle Combe: 'Prettiest village in England' for autumn

Castle Combe, a village in the Cotswolds, has been named one of the best places for an autumn break, according to travel blog The Gap Decaders. The village is known for its historic streets, honey-stone cottages and picturesque surroundings.

A village with cinematic history

The village has reportedly served as a backdrop for scenes in films and TV shows including War Horse, Stardust, The Wolfman, Doctor Dolittle, Robin Hood and Downton Abbey. Its scenic beauty has long attracted visitors seeking a quiet weekend away.

Phil Kelly and Izzy Nicholls, who run The Gap Decaders, list Castle Combe as one of their top autumn destinations, “where you can soak in the season, reconnect with nature, and enjoy all the charm that an English autumn has to offer.”

What visitors can see

A Tripadvisor reviewer who visited the village said: “Castle Combe is tiny, but it's often said to be the prettiest village in England, and it was certainly the prettiest village we visited.” The reviewer described “quaint honey-stone cottages with charming lanes, a 13th-century church, a medieval market cross in the centre of the village, and a timelessness that comes from the fact that no new buildings have been constructed here since the 1600s.”

The reviewer added: “We spent about an hour in Castle Combe, which was long enough to see everything and enjoy a gentle stroll across the lawns of the Manor House. However, if you only have time to do one thing, make sure you stop by the beautiful old stone bridge that crosses the River Bybrook. It is the most picturesque scene.”

Landmarks and walks

One notable spot in the area is the Market Cross, a significant landmark that plays a key role in the village's heritage. Another essential attraction is the By Brook, which flows through the village before merging with the River Avon near Bath.

Visitors can also explore the countryside surrounding the village with a range of scenic walks. For those seeking a peaceful autumn break, Castle Combe offers a quiet and historic setting.
