With a £20,000 budget, car buyers face a wide range of options, from crossover SUVs to convertibles, petrol and diesel to fully electric, and brands from Ford to Mercedes. Express.co.uk has ranked the 10 best motors under £20,000 for road users.
10 - Mercedes-Benz GLA 200 AMG Line
Mercedes knows how to build a car, and the GLA 200 AMG Line could be ideal for commuters always on the road. The elevated driving position offers excellent visibility, while the MBUX infotainment system is a standout feature.
The cabin blocks out a lot of the wind and tyre noise during high-speed motorway driving, making this a comfortable way to cruise to the office.
9 - Honda Civic
Those on the lookout for something with a track history of reliability on a budget should look no further than the ninth-generation Honda Civic. Owners have been known to do well over 100,000 miles, while WhatCar? handed the model an impressive reliability rating of 96.1%.
It's not only reliability that makes this model stand out. Honda has fitted many of their cars with “magic seats” that can be folded down to create extra space. The boot can usually hold 478 litres, but this can be expanded to 1,342 litres with the seats folded flat.
8 - Skoda Octavia
On the roads a lot and sick of rising fuel costs? The Skoda Octavia may be for you with one of the best efficiency rates on the road. The 1.5-litre petrol Octavia can deliver well over 50mpg, with the 2-litre diesel version reaching over 63mpg.
The Octavia has plenty of room for families, with 640 litres of boot space available. Second-hand fourth-generation models can be picked up for under £20,000.
7 - Mazda CX-5
Heavier vehicles are enjoying a boost in interest at the moment, with demand for compact SUVs surging 20% between 2024 and 2025. By estimation, Mazda’s CX-5 looks better than a Nissan Qashqai, and all the stats show this is a strong car.
CX-5s have an impressive fuel economy (52 miles per gallon for diesel models). The car also comes with a 5-star Euro NCAP safety record and is fairly cheap as well, with some on the market for under £5,000.
