Liverpool third for Lotto millionaires per capita

Liverpool ranks third in the UK for National Lottery millionaires relative to its adult population, new figures show. The city has recorded 166 millionaire winners in total since the lottery launched in 1994, placing it fifth overall, but when adjusted for adult population it moves up to third.

Birmingham leads the UK for the total number of National Lottery millionaires, with 234 recorded. Belfast follows with 202, Glasgow has 178, and Sheffield has 171. Liverpool's 166 puts it just ahead of Manchester, which has 163.

140 new millionaires in 2026

So far in 2026, a total of 140 Lotto players across the UK have become millionaires - around one every 48 hours. More than half of these wins came after the launch of the new-look Lotto game in June, where players get two chances to win from the same ticket.

Organisers expect this will lead to a doubling in the number of new Lotto millionaires each year. The figures cover both winners who went public and those who chose to remain anonymous, and relate to postcode areas rather than individual full postcodes or council boundaries.

Motherwell tops per-capita table

Bigger postcode areas naturally have more winners simply because more people live there. Comparing totals with the estimated adult population offers a better insight into how lucky a particular area is.

On this measure, Motherwell tops the table, with one millionaire for every 4,156 adults - equivalent to about 2.41 millionaires per 10,000 adults. Watford is second, and Liverpool third.

Kathy Garrett, winners experience lead at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, said: "One of the things we love most about The National Lottery is seeing luck turn up in every corner of the UK.

"From big cities to small towns, we've celebrated thousands of life-changing wins over the years, and these figures show that there is no single postcode for luck."

Recent winners and higher-tier prizes

More recent figures show Manchester and Liverpool leading the millionaire table. Manchester has had 30 recorded winners since 2023, and Liverpool has had 29. Birmingham follows with 27.

The data also reveals areas where players have won prizes below £1 million but still enough to change their lives. Liverpool and Romford are the only areas which make it onto both lucky lists, with other areas of Scotland also among the most likely to see people win big on the Lotto, but not enough to make them a millionaire.

The areas with the most Higher Tier (£50k - just under £1m) winners per head of population include Galashiels with one in 792, Romford with one in 793, and Sunderland with one in 815. Liverpool appears on this list with one in 906.
