A Bolton councillor has joined the Liberal Democrats, switching allegiance for the second time since being elected in 2024. Samantha Williamson, who represents Horwich South and Blackrod, sat as a Communities First Independent councillor.
She was elected to the 60-strong council in May 2024 as a member of the Horwich and Blackrod First Independents before quitting the party in November 2024.
Councillor's reason for joining
Coun Williamson said: "I am happy to be joining the Liberal Democrats because I can see they are the party that cares about honesty, integrity, and respect, and also they are committed to putting people first.
"With this move I am strengthening my ability to stand up for the residents of Horwich South and Blackrod, work constructively across Bolton, and deliver real results for the community I am proud to serve."
Bolton Liberal Democrat leader Coun Garry Veevers said: "We are thrilled to welcome Samantha to the Bolton Liberal Democrat family.
"Over her time spent serving the people of Horwich South and Blackrod, Samantha has proven herself to be an outstanding advocate for her residents.
"It is clear that we share the same values, putting local people first, listening to our communities, and working tirelessly for a fairer, greener, and more prosperous Bolton. Samantha will be a fantastic asset to our team."
New group sizes at the town hall
Her joining the Liberal Democrats means the group now has six councillors at the town hall, making them the fourth largest political group. Horwich and Blackrod First and the Greens each have five members.
The council is currently under minority Labour control. It has 18 councillors, with both Reform UK and the Conservatives having 10 members each.
Coun Williamson's switch is the second change of allegiance at the council in the past week. Yusuf Davda, who won a by-election 10 weeks ago for the Rumworth ward, joined the Green Party after being on the ballot paper as an Independent.
He said: "Joining the Green Party is not a decision taken lightly or out of frustration with others, but out of a genuine belief that it offers the most constructive and community-focused path forward."
