British Champions Day 2026 odds, tips and betting guide for Ascot
Champions Day 2026 odds, tips and Ascot betting guide

British Champions Day, the traditional conclusion to the British Flat racing season and the richest raceday in the UK, takes place on Saturday at Ascot with seven races and total prize money of £4.35m. The first race is scheduled to begin at 12:55pm BST.

A key talking point entering Champions Day is the battle between Andrew Balding and Aidan O'Brien for the British Flat Trainers' Championship. The pair are separated by a small sum of money, well under £100,000, with big prize money still on the card.

Eleven runners have been declared for the curtain-raiser, with Arapaho Gold and Inner City Blues heading the betting, some way clear of Night In Vegas and Satellite Of Love. In 2025, this race was introduced to break up the five Group 1s. Last year's inaugural running was won by Mission Central, trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by Christophe Soumillon, sent off at 5-1 to beat Ardisia by half a length.

Latest odds: Inner City Blues 9/4, Arapaho Gold 4/1, Satellite of Love 7/1, Night In Vegas 8/1, Speed of Sound 25/1, Victory Gold 25/1, Adaay of Scarlett 25/1, Confucius 33/1, Oakford 33/1, Crusherman 100/1, Theheatison 200/1.

Long Distance Cup and Sprint Stakes

Ten horses have been declared for the Long Distance Cup. Caballo De Mar heads the market after victory at the Arc meeting in the Qatar Prix du Cadran, with St Leger winner Highwayman the chief danger stepping up in trip. Gregory is an interesting contender after winning his last two starts, having missed most of 2025 following wind surgery.

Sixteen runners are declared for the Champion Sprint Stakes. Almeraq is the clear favourite and is bidding for a Group 1 hat-trick, having beaten Satono Reve in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot before an emphatic four-and-a-quarter length win in the Sprint Cup at Haydock. Kind Of Blue, the 2024 winner of this race, returns for a third year off the back of a confidence-boosting win at Kempton.

Fillies and Mares Stakes and QEII Stakes

Thirteen runners have been declared for the British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes and Kalpana is a strong favourite bidding for an unprecedented Champions Day hat-trick in this race. She was victorious last time out at Ascot when beating Calandagan in the King George before finishing fifth in the Arc. Lilt and Minnie Hauk are next in the market behind the Andrew Balding-trained star.

Latest odds: Kalpana 6/4, Lilt 7/1, Sparan Nua 8/1, Minnie Hauk 8/1, Johanna Walsh 10/1, Danielle 12/1, See The Fire 16/1, Believed 20/1, Tajlina 25/1, Coedana 25/1, Inis Mor 33/1, Symbol of Majesty 66/1, Sugar Island 150/1.

Eleven horses have been declared for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Talk Of New York was supplemented for £70,000 after an impressive win in the Joel Stakes and heads the market for Godolphin, with French raider Rayif the chief threat after completing the French 2,000 Guineas and Prix Jacques le Marois double. Gstaad was switched here from the Champion Stakes by Aidan O'Brien and is chasing a first win since the Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Latest odds: Talk Of New York 11/4, Rayif 5/1, Zavateri 8/1, Gstaad 10/1, Ten Bob Tony 10/1, Zeus Olympios 10/1, More Thunder 10/1, Docklands 33/1, Hawk Mountain 66/1, Dancing Gemini 100/1, Needle Match 150/1.

Champion Stakes and Balmoral Handicap

Six horses have been declared for the feature race of Champions Day. Calandagan is the 2-1 favourite to defend his title, bouncing back from defeat behind Kalpana in the King George, with Ombudsman his closest market rival. Bay City Roller arrives in the best form of the six, having chased home Daryz in both the Prix Foy and the Arc, and drops back in trip.

Latest odds: Calandagan 5/2, Ombudsman 5/2, Bay City Roller 9/2, Almaqam 15/2, Constitution River 12/1, Devils Advocate 150/1.

The Balmoral Handicap wraps up proceedings at Ascot. Gavriel is joint-favourite and is bidding for compensation for John and Thady Gosden after being touched off as favourite in the Cambridgeshire at Newmarket. Scoville, trained by William Haggas, joins Gavriel at the top of the market after victory at Doncaster in September.

Latest odds: Gavriel 6/1, Scoville 6/1, Crown of Oaks 13/2, Colori Forever 12/1, Ebts Guard 12/1, Indalo 12/1, Bullet Point 12/1, Fifth Column 14/1, Excellent Believe 16/1, Hickory 16/1, Beagle Bay 20/1, Tribal Chief 20/1, 25/1 bar.

Trainers' championship battle

As of 14 October 2026, Andrew Balding leads the money list with £8,752,603 amassed in domestic prize money. Aidan O'Brien lies just £93,944 behind on £8,658,659. William Haggas is a distant third. This would be Balding's first trainers' title while O'Brien is in pursuit of his ninth in all. The British Champions Day pot of £4.35m is one of the last big swings left before the season ends.

Balding's biggest hope this weekend is Gavriel in the Balmoral, while O'Brien has multiple runners across the card.

Betting tips and history

Factors to consider include odds movement, key information such as jockey bookings, course and draw bias, ground conditions, and shopping around for the best prices. British Champions Day was created in 2011, bringing together long-running Ascot and Newmarket season-finale races. Frankel's unbeaten career closed with back-to-back Champions Day wins at the QEII Stakes in 2011 and Champion Stakes in 2012, in front of a modern-day record autumn crowd of 32,000.

2026 is only the second running of British Champions Day with seven races, with the 2YO Conditions race added in 2025. Total prize money now tallies up to a record £4.35m, the richest card in British racing. The 2026 edition takes place at Ascot on Saturday, October 17th.
