A Southern California woman has experienced what she describes as a miraculous reunion with her beloved dog, five full years after the pet vanished without any trace from her family's backyard. Michelle Bluestone, aged 29, had long presumed her cherished dog Lola was deceased after the small Schnauzer mix managed to slip through a fence at her parents' home in Reseda back in 2021 and disappeared completely.
Years of Searching and Heartbreak
'Losing her completely shattered me. I was doing everything I could, day and night, just trying to find her,' Bluestone explained to the Daily Mail. She dedicated weeks to putting up flyers, posting extensively on social media platforms, and chasing down reported sightings. She even joined numerous Facebook groups dedicated to missing pets, where tips occasionally led her to help reunite other lost animals with their owners, but never her own Lola.
Bluestone originally adopted Lola in 2018 during her final semester of college, visiting a shelter simply to play with dogs as a stress reliever with no intention of adopting. That changed instantly when she met Lola. She recounted how the dog's anxiety seemed to melt away when she held her, and she knew immediately she could not leave without her.
The Mysterious Disappearance
Lola, primarily an indoor dog who was not wearing a collar at the time, is believed to have been spooked and escaped through a small crawl space under a backyard door. Bluestone noted she had been advised against leaving a collar on her dog while home alone for safety reasons. Despite Lola being microchipped, no one ever contacted Bluestone, and over time she was forced to accept she might never see her dog again.
'After a while, I just accepted the idea that she might not be alive anymore,' she admitted. Years passed, and life moved forward. Bluestone got married, relocated to Simi Valley, and adopted a new dog named Sunny, yet the profound loss of Lola never truly faded.
The Unexpected Call in 2026
In February 2026, everything changed dramatically. Bluestone was at home when she received a call from an unfamiliar number informing her that Lola had been found alive—just a mere 30-minute drive from where she was last seen. 'When they told me they had Lola, I was completely thrown off. I kept thinking there was no way it could actually be her,' she said.
The call originated from an animal shelter in Echo Park after a compassionate individual discovered Lola on the side of the road approximately 25 miles from where she had gone missing and turned her over to the police. 'It didn't feel real at first. I needed a moment to even process what they were saying,' Bluestone added.
An Emotional Reunion
Bluestone rushed to the shelter, still struggling to process the reality of the situation. Video footage of the reunion captures Bluestone gasping as Lola, now 11 years old, is brought out by shelter staff, before she embraces the dog she hadn't seen in half a decade. 'Seeing her again after all that time was overwhelming. I couldn't believe she was really in front of me,' she expressed.
This poignant reunion occurred at a moment Bluestone said she needed it most, following two miscarriages and just two months after her grandfather passed away in December. Remarkably, Lola, who was three at the time of her disappearance, survived five arduous years on her own.
Lola's Condition and Recovery
Upon being found, Lola had 11 rotted teeth that required extraction and severely overgrown nails that had curled so extensively she was effectively walking on them. However, her overall condition was far better than anticipated. 'I still don't know how she made it all that time. It's incredible she survived,' Bluestone remarked.
Bluestone believes it is possible someone may have taken Lola in at some point rather than her surviving entirely independently. Although initially timid, Lola quickly settled back into home life. Despite being older now, Bluestone said Lola remains the same affectionate dog, often rolling onto her back to request belly rubs.
A Bittersweet Return
Now reunited with Bluestone and her new family, including Sunny, Lola is gradually returning to her old self, but the reunion has also been bittersweet. 'It's amazing to have her back, but it's also hard thinking about everything she went through and all the time we lost,' Bluestone reflected.
She emphasized that this extraordinary experience has reinforced the critical importance of microchipping pets and maintaining hope. 'Miracles can happen. I grieved her and thought she was dead after months of searching, but she came back,' Bluestone concluded, highlighting a story of resilience and unexpected joy.
