Parts of Britain are expected to be hotter than Ibiza this week, with London forecast to reach 30C (86F), according to the Met Office. This would surpass the previous high for 2020 of 28.2C recorded on 20 May in Suffolk.
A north-south split is predicted from Monday, with southern England reaching the mid-20s while Scotland sees mid-teens. Daytime showers in northern Scotland and Ireland should clear by evening. Temperatures will 'build day on day', peaking at 30C by Wednesday, said meteorologist Emma Salter.
With the Covid-19 alert level lowered to three, emergency services urge continued adherence to 2-metre distancing. Age UK warns that older people are more susceptible to heat-related illness, especially during lockdown. Director Caroline Abrahams advised checking on elderly relatives via phone or video calls.
The Royal Horticultural Society and Water UK urge gardeners to minimise water use, suggesting water butts and watering cans instead of hoses. The National Fire Chiefs Council warns against campfires due to wildfire risk, advising to call 999 immediately if a fire is spotted.
However, the heatwave may be short-lived, with potential thunderstorms forecast for Friday.
