UK heatwave alert: 28C scorcher to hit 14 counties in days

New weather maps show temperatures reaching 28C across parts of southern and eastern England on Monday, September 7, with 14 counties forecast to see the mercury climb to that level.

The latest maps from WXCharts show a plume of much warmer air pushing across the region, with temperatures forecast to climb widely into the mid-to-high 20s. A large swathe of the country is shown reaching 27C to 28C by 6pm.

Hottest areas and regional divide

The hottest conditions are concentrated across London, the South East, East of England and parts of the Midlands, according to the model which runs from the early hours on Saturday, August 29. The mercury could climb even higher in some areas, with maps showing temperatures peaking at 29C, particularly across southern England, while temperatures fall away considerably further north and west.

A temperature anomaly map also shows a striking divide across Britain, with southern England forecast to be significantly warmer than the 1991-2020 climate average, while cooler-than-average conditions are indicated across parts of northern Britain.

Regional forecasts

The South East looks set to see some of the hottest conditions, with temperatures reaching 28C across London, the Home Counties and towards East Anglia. Further west, temperatures of around 25C to 27C are shown across parts of southern England and the West Country.

Much of Wales is forecast to reach the low-to-mid 20s, falling short of the highest temperatures further east. A clear north-south divide is also visible, with parts of northern England reaching around 20C to 23C.

Conditions are expected to be considerably cooler across Scotland, where temperatures are generally shown in the mid-to-high teens. However, some parts of Scotland could still see the mercury climb towards 20C.
