US Weather Alert: 'Particularly Dangerous' Wildfire Threat Hits Wyoming and Colorado
Dangerous US wildfire threat prompts urgent warnings

Meteorologists have declared a severe and imminent threat to life and property across parts of the American West, issuing an urgent 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' alert for thousands of residents. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that a combination of hurricane-force winds and critically dry conditions on Friday has created a tinderbox scenario, with echoes of the devastating 2021 Marshall Fire.

Extreme Conditions Spark Critical Fire Weather

The core of the danger lies in a powerful wind event sweeping across the region. The NWS reports sustained winds of 40 to 50 mph, with gusts potentially reaching a staggering 75 to 105 mph in the most vulnerable foothill areas. These winds, comparable to a Category 2 or 3 hurricane, are combining with single-digit relative humidity and dry vegetation to create perfect conditions for any fire to explode in size and intensity.

Red Flag Warnings, signalling critical fire weather, are in effect for southern Wyoming's Laramie Range, most of Laramie County, and much of Colorado's Front Range. The specific 'Particularly Dangerous Situation' (PDS) designation—a rare and severe tier of alert—has been applied to the southern Laramie Range and foothills in Wyoming, and the Front Range foothills in northern and central Colorado.

Communities on High Alert, Travel Disrupted

In Colorado, the NWS office in Boulder issued its first-ever PDS alert for northwest Jefferson and western Boulder counties, including the town of Louisville. Officials explicitly stated that current conditions mirror those that fuelled the Marshall Fire in December 2021, which destroyed over 1,000 homes. The most hazardous conditions are expected along Highway 93 into the higher foothills.

The Wyoming Department of Transportation has imposed significant travel restrictions in response. Key routes including Interstates 80 and 25 are closed to light and high-profile vehicles in multiple sections, such as I-25 from the Colorado state line to Whitaker Road, and I-80 from Rawlins through the Laramie Valley into Cheyenne.

Widespread Warnings and Urgent Safety Advice

The threat extends beyond Wyoming and Colorado. Additional Red Flag Warnings are active for:

  • The central and western Nebraska Sandhills and the eastern Panhandle.
  • The southwestern and northwest Texas Panhandle.

The NWS has issued stark guidance for residents in the PDS zones, warning that 'safe and timely evacuation may not be possible' if a fire approaches rapidly. They urge people to:

  1. Assemble an emergency supply kit immediately.
  2. Know multiple evacuation routes from their area.
  3. Have several ways to receive alerts from emergency services.
  4. Avoid any outdoor burning or activities that could spark a fire.

A cold front moving through the region tonight is expected to bring some relief by Saturday afternoon, potentially accompanied by mountain snow. However, the immediate hours ahead present a period of exceptional and life-threatening risk, prompting an unprecedented level of warning from forecasters.
