Tropical Cyclone Vaianu Poses Severe Threat to New Zealand
Forecasters have issued a stark warning that Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, currently moving through the Pacific, could unleash life-threatening winds and torrential rainfall upon New Zealand later this week. The MetService has activated strong wind watches across the entire North Island, highlighting the potential for catastrophic conditions.
Cyclone Details and Projected Path
Classified as a Category 3 cyclone, Vaianu is advancing south of Fiji towards New Zealand, with sustained winds exceeding 150 kilometres per hour at its core. Meteorologists note that while the exact trajectory remains uncertain, it is increasingly probable the storm will make landfall on Sunday. This event is expected to bring damaging, potentially life-threatening winds, heavy precipitation, and hazardous coastal surges.
Forecast and Preparedness Measures
Meteorologist John Law emphasised the severity, stating, "We have several days until we see the impacts of Vaianu on New Zealand, so this is an early severe weather watch—a heads-up for significant weather this weekend." Severe weather watches, typically issued one to three days in advance, have been extended due to the storm's potential intensity. As forecasts clarify, these watches may escalate to full warnings.
The heaviest rainfall is anticipated in the northern and eastern regions of the North Island, but the storm's effects could extend across large swathes of the country, prompting widespread concern.
Context of Recent Storms
New Zealand has endured a series of severe weather events this year. In January, tropical storms triggered fatal landslides in the North Island, while February saw nationwide flooding, landslides, and power disruptions. The most devastating was Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle in 2023, which claimed 11 lives, caused approximately 850,000 landslides—a global record—and became the costliest weather-related disaster in the nation's history.
Other Cyclonic Activity in the Region
In a separate development, Severe Tropical Cyclone Maila has intensified into a Category 5 system, with winds near its centre reaching 215 kilometres per hour and gusts up to 295 kilometres per hour. Located in the Solomon Sea and heading towards far north Queensland, Maila is not expected to impact New Zealand, according to the MetService.
Authorities urge residents to stay informed and prepare for potential evacuations as Vaianu approaches, underscoring the critical need for vigilance in the face of this escalating natural threat.
