Mother dies after being washed away in Spanish floods

A mother has died after being washed away in floods that swept across much of Spain and the Balearic Islands. Emergency services recovered the woman's body floating in the water at the port in Premià de Mar, a coastal town north of Barcelona.

The woman had ignored advice from authorities to stay indoors during the storm and had gone walking near a canal with her husband and two children, according to 20minutos.

Heavy Rain and Fatalities

Oscar Fernandez, the mayor of nearby Cabrera de Mar, said some people had decided to cross the water just as 60 litres of rain fell within 40 minutes. In total, five people have died in the extreme weather in Catalunya within the past 15 days, according to authorities.

Storm Adam Disrupts Travel

Several cities were severely disrupted by heavy rain brought by Storm Adam, which suspended operations at Ibiza airport, with delays also reported in Alicante and Málaga. Air traffic controllers reported challenging conditions at various hubs across Spain as flights were forced to cancel due to the poor weather.

A statement on X said: 'After a very challenging Saturday marked by storms, a similarly complicated Sunday lies ahead. Storm cores are forecast for the southern and eastern mainland areas and the Balearic Islands.'

'To ensure safety, therefore, regulations on air traffic have already been coordinated through Eurocontrol for the entire morning. Most routes passing through those sectors of airspace will be affected in the form of ground delays, while Eurocontrol's algorithm will assign takeoff slots.'

Red Alert and Flooding

Ibiza was placed on a red weather alert for rain by Spain's meteorological agency Aemet last night. Pictures showed water seeping into the airport's terminal building, leaving waiting areas drenched and check-in zones flooded.

In Formentera, the smallest of the Balearic Islands, footage showed a church nave and care home inundated with water, as 183mm of rain battered the area. The wave of storms is the latest in several weeks of extreme weather across the Iberian peninsula, with previous bouts of torrential rain trapping people in flooded buses, cars floating in waterlogged tunnels and water pouring into metro stations.
