UK Homes in 2 Areas Urged to Prepare to Turn Off Gas, Water and Electricity Amid Flood Warning
UK Homes Told to Prep to Turn Off Gas, Water, Electricity

The Met Office has issued a 17-hour yellow weather warning for heavy rain, prompting households in two areas of northwest Scotland to prepare to turn off their gas, water and electricity supplies. The warning is in effect from 5pm on Sunday, July 5, 2026, until 10am on Monday morning.

Affected Areas and Rainfall Forecast

The warning covers the Highlands and Eilean Siar, as well as Argyll and Bute in Strathclyde. According to the Met Office, widespread rainfall of 20-40mm is expected, with up to 75mm in mountainous regions. The most exposed spots could see close to 100mm. The heaviest and most persistent rain is forecast from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, tapering off later on Monday.

Travel Disruption and Flooding Risk

Households in the warning areas should expect travel disruption, including longer bus and train journeys. Spray and flooding on roads are likely, and there is a possibility of flooding for homes and businesses. The Met Office advises making an emergency flood kit, gathering torches, batteries, and mobile phone power packs in case of a power cut.

Steps to Prepare for Flooding

The Met Office recommends six steps to protect your home or business: check flood advice in your area, charge mobile phones, park your car outside the flood zone, prepare a flood kit, store valuables up high, and turn off gas, water and electricity supplies. The National Grid adds: “If flood water is about to enter your property, turn off your electricity supply using the isolator switch or fuse unit. Only attempt this if it's safe to do so, and never take any unnecessary risks.”

Safety Instructions if Trapped

If trapped by floodwater, go to the highest level in the building, avoid attic spaces to prevent being trapped by rising water, only go to a roof if necessary, call 999, and wait for help. The Met Office stresses: “You should only switch off your gas, water and electricity supplies if it is safe to do so and be sure that you don’t touch an electrical switch if you’re standing in water.”

Location of Shut-Off Valves

Your water stop tap is usually inside your home where the water supply comes in, or outside near the property boundary under a cover. The gas shut-off valve is next to the gas meter, and the mains electricity cut-off is on the fuse board with a marked on/off switch. The National Grid warns: “Never touch any electrical appliances, cables, or equipment while standing in floodwater. Please don't touch any appliances, cables, or equipment that has been touched by floodwater, as they may not be safe.”
