England Fans Face Later Bedtime as Thunderstorms Could Delay World Cup Clash
Thunderstorms May Delay England vs Mexico World Cup Match

England fans may face an even later bedtime as severe thunderstorms threaten to delay the World Cup last-16 clash against Mexico, which already has a 1am UK kick-off. Pubs have been permitted to stay open until 5am for the match, but venues may need to accommodate punters for longer if violent storms hit the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

Weather Threatens Kick-Off

AccuWeather forecasters have warned of a 28% chance of thunderstorms causing a delay, similar to what happened during Mexico's previous game against Ecuador. That match kicked off an hour later than planned due to poor weather just minutes before the scheduled start.

If a similar delay occurs for England's match, and the game goes to extra time and penalties, fans could be up until 5am. The Three Lions secured their place in the last 16 by beating the Democratic Republic of the Congo 2-1 on Wednesday.

Calls for Bank Holiday

Fans are now calling on the government to grant an extra bank holiday on Monday to allow supporters to stay up and cheer on the squad without losing sleep. Garford Beck, founder of EnglandFans FC, who is on a 47-hour road trip to Mexico City, told Metro: 'I want as many people as possible to be able to get behind Thomas and the boys and watch the game back home.'

'Given the importance of the game and the chaotic scenes that's bound to unfold, I support calls for Monday to be granted Bank Holiday status. I back calls for children to be allowed to stay up too as there is no way they are going to be fit for work. The grown-ups, of course, will most likely drink copious amounts of alcohol whilst watching the game, so they're not likely to be much good for work either.'

England Boss Encourages Kids to Stay Up

England manager Thomas Tuchel has already told parents they should let their children stay up and 'write an excuse for school' the next day. The demands for a bank holiday hinge on the decision to give Scotland a day off on June 15th to mark their World Cup opener against Haiti.

Fans are advised to check local listings and prepare for potential delays as the nation rallies behind the Three Lions in their quest for World Cup glory.
