Fans attending three consecutive nights of concerts at Cardiff Castle this week will benefit from additional heat-relief measures as Wales experiences its third heatwave of the year, with temperatures forecast to reach 34°C.
Billy Ocean performs on Thursday, July 9, Bastille on Friday, July 10, and David Gray on Saturday, July 11. The Met Office has predicted a hot and sunny spell across south Wales, with Friday expected to be the hottest day, creeping above 30°C and peaking at 34°C.
Heatwave context and recent records
This heatwave follows record-breaking temperatures in Wales just weeks ago. Wales recorded its hottest ever June day when Bute Park in Cardiff hit 35.9°C during concerts by The Cure, McFly and Teddy Swims. While this week's temperatures may not be as extreme, the heatwave is expected to last longer, with highs in much of south Wales not dipping below 25°C for the next 10 days.
According to the Met Office forecast for Thursday evening: "A warm and sunny evening. Staying clear overnight, but the risk of some patches of mist and fog forming once more. A warm night for most. Minimum temperature 12°C." For Friday, the forecast states: "Early fog clearing to leave a hot and sunny day across the country. Light winds and high UV levels expected. A very warm evening and night to come too. Maximum temperature 34°C." The outlook for Saturday to Monday says: "Staying dry, sunny and very warm throughout. The wind picking up a little may just allow it to feel not quite as hot for most. Nights remaining warm."
Extra heat measures for Cardiff Castle gigs
Organisers have implemented several measures to help concertgoers cope with the heat:
- Increased water allowance – attendees may now bring 2 x 500ml sealed bottles of water per person (previously 1 bottle).
- Additional shaded areas will be available across the site.
- Free water refill stations will be available throughout the festival.
- Plastic refillable water bottles are permitted and can be used at water stations.
- Mini fans are permitted for entry.
- An enhanced welfare team presence will be on site to provide support and assistance.
These measures come as organisers aim to ensure the safety and comfort of fans during the prolonged warm spell.
