Bamburgh, a picturesque village in Northumberland, has been crowned the best seaside destination in the UK for the sixth year in a row, according to a survey by consumer champion Which?. The coastal location, famed for its imposing castle dating back more than 1,400 years, achieved a destination score of 84% and five stars across categories including beach, seafront, and scenery.
Survey Methodology and Criteria
Which?'s annual analysis of the UK's most beloved seaside getaways surveyed over 5,300 people about 11,999 experiences of visiting a British seaside town for leisure in the previous year. Respondents were quizzed on criteria such as quality of beaches, scenery, food and drink, accommodation, tourist attractions, shopping, and value for money. The destination score is based on visitor satisfaction and their likelihood of recommending the location to others.
Bamburgh's Winning Attributes
Visitors praised Bamburgh for its “lovely beach overlooking Bamburgh Castle” and “spectacular coastal scenery.” Though technically a village, it is often ranked among Britain's best seaside towns due to its awe-inspiring coastline and serene atmosphere. The destination earned five stars for its beach, seafront, and scenery, contributing to its top score.
North East Dominance
Fellow North East favourite Tynemouth in Tyne and Wear secured second place with an 82% score, earning five stars for its seafront/pier and food and drink. Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, commented: “The North East has emerged as this year’s favourite seaside spot, a reflection of its outstanding beaches and the fact that holidays here can be fantastic value for money. It also shows that there are special seaside towns in every corner of the UK. From Swanage to Plockton, Southwold to Conwy, you’ll have a great time in many of the country’s lesser-known destinations, and should save some money too.”
