Passenger ferry crashes into Istanbul mansion, CCTV shows

CCTV footage has captured the moment a passenger ferry appeared to collide with a mansion and a boat moored in front of the waterfront property in Istanbul, Turkey. Videos from the scene show the large vessel careering into an outside terrace, smashing into a smaller boat in its path.

Incident in Üsküdar

Turkish news outlets reported that the incident took place in Üsküdar, an Istanbul suburb on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. The crash is believed to have occurred at 10:30pm on Tuesday, October 6. It is thought that both the mansion and the boat were owned by a businessman, and both sustained damage, according to DHA news. The outlet added that no injuries were reported.

CCTV shows collision sequence

The footage shows the larger ferry approaching the smaller boat, initially sending birds flying away. The ferry's bow then collides with the side of the boat, pinning it against the outside terrace. The boat is thrown backwards as the ferry continues into the terrace, quickly destroying a metal fence and retaining wall.

The ferry then travels a few metres into the terrace before slowly sliding back into the water. As it retreats, people onboard can be seen rushing to its bow, with hands on heads, expressing disbelief at the incident.

Aftermath and damage

Videos taken from inside the mansion show the chaos left behind, with fences destroyed, furniture broken, and plants ripped apart. The mansion occupants and ferry personnel can be heard shouting at one another in the footage.
