FIFA has sought to clarify the confusion surrounding England's World Cup 2026 clash against Mexico, confirming that no official decision was made to change the kick-off time despite widespread reports suggesting otherwise. The match, scheduled for Monday at Mexico City's iconic Estadio Azteca, was originally set for 1am UK time (7pm local time), but weather forecasts predicting thunderstorms and heavy rain led to speculation that the start would be moved earlier.
Conflicting Reports Emerge
On Friday night, numerous reports indicated that the kick-off time would be brought forward to 7pm UK time (midday local time) to avoid the worst of the weather. However, Mexican media then suggested the Mexican Football Association was unhappy with the change, prompting further speculation that the game would revert to its original slot. FIFA sources have now told Sky Sports that, despite the confusion, no decision was ever taken to move the game. FIFA will meet with local organisers in Mexico City on Saturday to further discuss potential disruptions.
Weather Concerns Remain
FIFA's weather reports currently warn of a 90% risk of lightning storms at the Estadio Azteca on Monday. The report states that "lightning activity which may temporarily affect outdoor operations" is expected and that match officials should "maintain readiness for lightning safety procedures." Under FIFA rules, a game is immediately postponed if lightning is detected within a six-mile radius of the stadium.
England Midfielder Speaks Out
England midfielder Morgan Rogers commented on the situation, saying: "We'll be ready regardless of the time... Earlier the better because you want to play." The statement highlights the team's adaptability as they prepare for a match that could be affected by severe weather. As things stand, the game remains scheduled for its original kick-off time of 1am UK time on Monday.
