Pasta Recall: Minton and Donello Orzo Poses Health Risk for Gluten Allergy Sufferers
Orzo Pasta Recall: Gluten Allergy Risk

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an urgent recall for Minton and Donello Organic White Orzo after discovering the product contains wheat (gluten) not declared on its label. The packaging incorrectly describes the product as "Orzo White Rice" despite orzo being a form of pasta. This poses a health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten, or with coeliac disease.

Recall Details and Affected Batches

The recall applies to the 500g pack size with batch codes 78850, 78850, and 78850, and best before dates of January 31, May 2, and May 24, 2027. The product was sold at Tesco, Ocado, Amazon, and Planet Organic across England and Wales only.

Dundeis UK Ltd, the distributor, has issued its own recall notice, stating: "Dundeis UK Ltd is recalling batches of Organic Orzo due to a labelling error and missing allergen labelling. Organic orzo has been labelled as Orzo White Rice. Additionally, the product contains wheat (gluten), which is missing on the packaging ingredient declaration. Therefore, the product is a potential health risk for consumers with an allergy or sensitivity to wheat or gluten."

Consumer Advice

The FSA advises: "If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten or with coeliac disease, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund." A point-of-sale notice has been placed, and allergy support organisations have been notified.

What is Orzo?

Orzo, also known as risoni, is a short-cut pasta shaped like a grain of rice, commonly used in stews, salads, and one-pot dishes. Food recalls occur when there is a risk to consumers due to allergy labelling or other food safety concerns.
