Liverpool are monitoring Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young after his development on loan at Huddersfield Town, according to a report from journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon platform. The Reds view the 19-year-old as a potential future number one.
Sunderland's valuation
Sunderland would demand a significant sum to consider selling one of their most highly-rated academy graduates, and Liverpool would have to meet the club's valuation. After impressing on loan at Salford City, Young signed a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light until 2030 before joining League One Huddersfield on a season-long loan during the summer.
Loan spell at Huddersfield
The England youth international has started all eight of Huddersfield's League One fixtures so far this season, conceding seven goals and keeping two clean sheets. He recently made his 100th senior appearance during the Terriers' 3-1 victory over Burton Albion.
Young has built up significant senior experience despite his age. Darlington was his first port of call before establishing himself as Salford's first-choice goalkeeper across two loan spells. He made 77 appearances for Salford and kept 15 clean sheets last season as the club reached the League Two play-off final.
Future prospects
Sunderland continue to have high hopes for Young and view his current spell at Huddersfield as the next stage of his development. Robin Roefs remains the Black Cats' established first-choice goalkeeper, but Young is regarded as a possible long-term successor.
Liverpool's reported interest provides further evidence of the teenager's growing reputation, although his lengthy Sunderland contract leaves the club in a strong negotiating position should interest develop further. Sunderland believe Young could potentially follow in the footsteps of another Academy goalkeeping graduate, Jordan Pickford, who also had numerous loan spells early in his career, including with Darlington.
