More than a month after the release of Resident Evil Requiem, fans have uncovered a hidden Easter egg that pays homage to The Lord of the Rings. The reference appears during a scene in Leon's section of the game, where he encounters a giant mutated spider in the ruins of Raccoon City.
As discovered by TikTok user Craigo Games, the sequence closely mirrors Shelob's reveal in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. In both scenes, the protagonist steps on a pile of bones, followed by a top-down camera angle revealing the oversized spider. A subsequent low-angle shot shows the spider crawling down a wall toward its prey, culminating in the character turning around to face the threat.
Fans have expressed surprise that the reference went unnoticed for so long, with many praising Capcom's attention to detail. Comments on social media include reactions such as 'There's no way that's not a reference' and 'Peak referencing peak.' One player noted they spotted it immediately during their first playthrough.
The Easter egg is a near shot-for-shot remake of the iconic moment from Peter Jackson's film, highlighting the developer's inspiration from the fantasy trilogy. The discovery adds to the list of secrets players have found since the game's launch.
