Lord of the Rings RPG Reportedly in Development at Veteran Studio
In the realm of modern sci-fi and fantasy, three franchises stand as cultural pillars for enthusiasts worldwide: Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings. While Star Wars and Harry Potter have enjoyed numerous video game adaptations, Lord of the Rings has lagged behind in recent years. Beyond the Shadow of Mordor series—with the less-discussed Gollum game—it has been quite some time since a studio attempted a substantial game set in Middle-earth.
Rumours of a Major New Project
However, this could soon change as rumours circulate that a veteran studio is working on a massive new Lord of the Rings RPG. This project is said to have the potential to compete with the anticipated Hogwarts Legacy sequel, generating excitement among fans. According to a report from Insider Gaming, the game is currently being funded by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, with Embracer Group also involved in funding and development behind the scenes.
Initial speculation pointed to Warhorse Studios, the Prague-based developer known for creating the immersive open-worlds in the Kingdom Come Deliverance games. This seemed like a natural fit given their expertise. However, Insider Gaming's report indicates that Warhorse is not involved; instead, custody of the project appears to reside with Crystal Dynamics.
Crystal Dynamics' Involvement and Challenges
Crystal Dynamics is renowned for revitalising the Tomb Raider series with modern entries, and it has two new projects in that franchise scheduled for release in 2026 and 2027. Despite these significant commitments, the studio is reportedly also developing the Lord of the Rings RPG in the background. With such a heavy workload, the project is thought to be still a bit away, meaning fans should not expect a reveal or release date in the near future.
Details about the game remain scarce, including its time period setting and whether it will feature a fully open-world Middle-earth. Crystal Dynamics has faced challenges in recent years, notably with the failure of its live-service game, Marvel's Avengers, and subsequent layoffs in 2025 and March 2026. The studio has not commented on the rumours, stating it does not address speculation.
Potential Impact and Fan Reactions
If true, this development could mark a significant moment for Lord of the Rings gaming, offering a fresh experience that might rival the success of Hogwarts Legacy. Fans are left wondering: would they play a brand new Lord of the Rings RPG from Crystal Dynamics? As the gaming community awaits official confirmation, the prospect of exploring Middle-earth in a new RPG format continues to spark interest and discussion.
