The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will debut on Peacock on July 30, following its theatrical run. The film, directed by Aaron Horvath, Michael Jelenic and Pierre Leduc, has become the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, surpassing $1 billion at the global box office.
Returning voice cast members include Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. New additions include Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Rosalina, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud and Benny Safdie as Bowser Junior.
In an interview with Forbes, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination's Chris Meledandri discussed their collaboration. Miyamoto explained that Super Mario Galaxy was chosen as the foundation for the sequel because it 'clicked as a key to creating the next movie,' allowing the team to show a 'different side' of Mario. Meledandri noted that the space setting offered an 'irresistible invitation' for audiences.
While a third film has not been confirmed, the sequel's end-credits scene introduces fan-favourite character Daisy, hinting at future instalments.
