Xbox has announced new caps on Cloud Gaming time in an unpopular move labelled an own goal by fans. Even Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will have their time limited under the new measures. Currently, eligible Game Pass members are able to stream select Xbox games via Cloud Gaming without any restrictions. But that will all come to an end in November, when Xbox says the new caps will come into force. Bosses say that the cost of providing cloud gaming is growing and has forced them into making the decision.
New monthly limits for Game Pass plans
As of November 2026, Game Pass plans will include the following monthly limits on Cloud Gaming: Ultimate: 15 hours, Premium: 10 hours, Essential: 5 hours. While Xbox says that the move will only affect four per cent of Game Pass users, fans say it’s an unnecessary decision that eliminates goodwill built up in recent weeks by initiatives like the new Disc-to-Digital feature.
Once those hours are used up, subscribers will be able to buy additional Cloud Gaming play time via the Xbox Store. Xbox hasn’t yet announced further details like pricing or features, simply saying the available hours may vary by market.
Xbox defends the change
A spokesperson said: “We’re introducing this model because the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer. Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance.
“We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost. In November, we’ll provide more information about pricing, purchasing additional hours, eligible games, market availability, and how players can check their remaining time.
“We’ll listen closely to player feedback before and after the change takes effect and share any adjustments we make.”
Fans react with anger
Users have hit out at the move, as many took to social media to complain. Some decried the decision, especially given the timing with Xbox “in the good graces of all with the physical to digital benefit”. One Reddit user wrote: “As someone who doesn't even use cloud streaming for any of my gaming, I find this ridiculous and insulting to everyone with a GamePass subscription.” While some replies pointed out the need for Xbox to become more profitable after a difficult year of cutbacks and job losses, the majority of users agreed.
One added: “We’re not going to pay for extra hours—we’ll just cancel our subscription or move over to GFN, Boosteroid, or Luna. And even if I were to buy a console after this kind of treatment, it sure wouldn’t be an Xbox.” Another said the move signalled a clear intent for the future of gaming. They wrote: “What’s most messed up is that this is clearly what the corporate overlords want the future to be. First they take the discs. Then they take consoles. Then they only have the cloud and they charge you by the hour.”
