Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are to be installed at two junctions in Stockport, in Hazel Grove and Cheadle village, to enforce traffic restrictions and potentially lead to fines for drivers.
The cameras will help enforce the yellow box at the junction of the A6 and New Moor Lane, near the Sainsbury's store and Stepping Hill hospital. They will also be placed at the junction of Massie Street and High Street in Cheadle village, where traffic is prohibited from turning right.
Council says changes will reduce holdups
"These changes will help make resident journeys in the borough quicker by limiting unnecessary traffic holdups, and also safer by reducing illegal traffic movements," Stockport Council said in a statement.
"The cameras will not go live as soon as they are installed and motorists will not start receiving fines straight away," the council continued. "The sites need to be prepared and the cameras installed and tested before enforcement begins."
Six-month warning period before fines
"When enforcement does begin, there will also be an introductory six-month period where a motorist’s first contravention will result in a warning notice rather than a Penalty Charge Notice. A subsequent contravention during that period could result in a fine," the council added.
Cameras are also to be installed at the Georges Road/A6 junction in Heaton Norris and A6/Bramhall Lane, near The Blossoms pub in Davenport, at a later date. Starting in 2022, the government gave permission for councils outside London to use ANPR cameras to enforce traffic restrictions.
