Reddit users have shared their tips for elevating spaghetti bolognese, with one simple ingredient standing out: cocoa powder. The suggestion emerged after a user asked others about their secret ingredients for the classic pasta dish.
A Surprising Twist on a Classic
Spaghetti bolognese is a staple in many UK households, prized for its simplicity and quick preparation. While most stick to minced meat, tomato sauce, onions, and seasonings, some home cooks add their own twists. One Reddit user, JulieWulie80, posed the question after learning that a friend uses a teaspoon of cocoa powder in their recipe.
The idea divided opinions. Some were horrified, while others explained that cocoa powder can enhance the dish. User No_Addendum_1399 said: "It can cut through some of the sweetness of the carrots and leave a more earthy taste to the bolognaise. I use a tsp of Bournville cocoa powder in mine."
How to Use Cocoa Powder
No_Addendum_1399 added: "I add it right at the end. You can use milk chocolate too but I find that weird tasting so I'll stick to dark. I only use a small amount as [I] don't have the sweetness of onion in mine due [to] an allium allergy."
Other users offered similar suggestions. One wrote: "I use a bit of tamarind sauce in any tomato based sauce. When I ate meat, cocoa powder or dark chocolate in things like spag bol or chilli." Another user, who said they "chuck loads in," also listed cocoa powder among their secret ingredients.
A Small Addition, Big Difference
According to Reddit user Adriesty, cocoa powder "adds more depth without it being overpowering." For home cooks preparing spaghetti bolognese, adding a small amount of cocoa powder could transform the dish's usual flavour profile.
