Many people reach for a baking soda and vinegar mix when their drain blocks, but this popular method may not be as effective as you think. The two ingredients actually neutralise one another when mixed, leaving essentially water with a small amount of salt.
As eco-conscious cleaning advocate Wendy at Moral Fibres points out, attempting to clear a drain with salty water is "rarely effective" because it "doesn't destroy fats" nor tackle other stubborn obstructions.
Why Soda Crystals Work Better
Soda crystals are a naturally occurring mineral salt that dissolves in water. They contain no bleach, enzymes, phosphates, palm oil or any other additives – just pure soda crystals – making them a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional drain cleaners.

How to Unblock Drains with Soda Crystals
Start by boiling a full kettle of water. When ready, gently and steadily pour the boiling water down the drain. This helps to melt away any fat and oil build-up.
After the hot water has completely drained, tip a generous cupful of soda crystals down the drain. Allow the soda crystals to work for five to 10 minutes, giving them time to tackle grease and fat deposits.
Then, boil another full kettle of water. Once ready, carefully and gradually pour it down the drain to flush away the soda crystals along with the dissolved fat and grease.
Be cautious, as the reaction between the soda crystals and blockages may cause splashes of hot water. Keep repeating the initial and final stages until the drain runs freely. You should notice progress with each cycle.
