Sky has confirmed the launch of a new broadband plan offering download speeds in excess of 1.5Gbps. At that rate, it would take around 40 seconds to download a full HD movie to a TV. For comparison, the UK average is around 100Mbps, making Sky's update over 10 times faster.
What the new plan includes
Customers who sign up will also get access to Sky Broadband's most advanced Gigafast+ hub ever. This includes the latest WiFi 7 technology, which supports much faster speeds and keeps more devices connected at the same time, making it ideal for very busy homes.
Full Fibre 1.6 Gbps will be available to purchase via Sky's call centres or at sky.com/broadband. At launch, it is only available to new customers, although existing users will be able to sign up at a later date.
Pricing and availability
The plan will be priced from £38 per month. Sky already offers faster 2.5Gbps and 5Gbps downloads, but those speeds are only available in a limited number of areas.
This new 1.6 Gbps option uses BT's more expansive Openreach network and is available to nearly four out of five (79 percent) of UK homes.

The UK's broadband network is certainly speeding up. EE recently announced a boost with some homes in the Guildford area now getting access to 8Gbps technology. Community Fibre, which supplies broadband access to over a million homes in London, now offers an 8.5Gbps option, letting homes download a full HD movie in just 5 seconds. That's around 100 times faster than a standard 80Mbps connection, but it costs £300 per month.
