Passenger regrets swapping seat after child stays awake

A plane passenger who agreed to swap their paid-for window seat so a child could sleep ended up regretting the decision after the youngster stayed wide awake for the entire journey.

The traveller gave up their seat under pressure from the child's mother, who claimed the child would fall asleep within 10 minutes. Instead, the passenger spent the whole flight in an aisle seat, feeling resentful and 'stupid' for not saying no.

Pressure to swap seats

According to the passenger's account on Reddit, a child was already sitting in their window seat when they arrived. The mother said: "Oh please let him sit, he'll fall asleep in 10 mins, and then you can take your seat."

The passenger gave in to avoid causing a scene in the cabin, but the child remained awake throughout the flight. After waiting roughly 30 minutes, the traveller asked for their seat back, only to be met with another appeal: "He's getting cranky, please."

Reaction from Reddit users

The passenger said the experience "honestly ruined my mood" and issued a broader message to parents: "I understand your child is cranky. I understand they really, really want the window seat. But, that's a you problem, book it and pay for it in advance."

The post drew widespread sympathy, with one user commenting: "I'm also cranky, bored, and wanting to look out of the window." Another said: "Your kid is not anyone else's responsibility."
