Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca has admitted Newcastle United target Nico Gonzalez is one of several players who could leave the club before transfer deadline day.
Talks over £50m deal
The Magpies are in talks with City over a potential deal, worth around £50m for the midfielder, although they are also thought to have other transfer options in mind.
Gonzalez is said to be interested in exploring a move, but at this stage no agreement has been struck between the two clubs.
Midfield rebuild at St James' Park
Newcastle are keen to add some Premier League experience to their midfield, after seeing Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes leave the club, and have identified the Spaniard as a strong candidate.
Man City are poised to lose several players, with Rodri departing for Barcelona, while Savinho and Omar Marmoush are targets for Tottenham.
Maresca on potential exits
Speaking before their first Premier League match against Bournemouth this weekend, Maresca was asked about potential exits, including Gonzalez.
"Apart from Rodri the rest all have in common one thing, they didn't play a lot," the new City boss said.
"When they don't play they prefer to leave. So the ones you mentioned, less Rodri, they are all players for different reasons who didn't play a lot.
"It is quite clear when the player wants to leave, then it is complicated to convince them to stay. It happened with Rodri and the same thing is happening with Savinho.
"Since day one he has come in and said he wanted to leave so now we are waiting."
New arrivals ahead of deadline
Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle has hinted he is confident of getting more deals done before the September 1 deadline, although any new arrivals will come too late to make the debut against Liverpool on Sunday.
As things stand, Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba, Bazoumana Toure and Amar Dedic are in line to make their league debuts for the club, with Lukas Hornicek expected to start in goal ahead of fellow new signing Ewen Jaouen.
