Man City appeal guilty verdict over Premier League financial breaches

Manchester City have confirmed they have submitted an appeal after being found guilty of all but one Premier League rule breach. The club lodged its comprehensive appeal at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026, within the deadline set by the Premier League.

Club statement on appeal

In a statement, Manchester City said: "Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the Club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter. The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe."

The club added: "The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case."

Premier League response

The Premier League had earlier confirmed that City had until Friday, October 2 to exercise their right to appeal the independent Commission’s findings. A statement from the top-flight's governing body said: "Now that the charges have been proved, the issue of sanction will be addressed separately in a further hearing with the independent Commission."

"In accordance with Premier League rules, that hearing will remain private and confidential until such a time as publication of the outcome is permitted. The club has the right to appeal the independent Commission’s findings and has until Friday 2 October to exercise that right. The Premier League Board’s intention is that the full process (including any appeals and publication of relevant decisions) is concluded as soon as possible."

City's earlier response

Earlier, City said they were "both disappointed and surprised by the opinion of the Premier League Commission", before reiterating their innocence. They stated: "The Club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions, relating to this case. The Club will therefore be relentless, and where necessary proactive, in any and all appropriate regulatory and legal forums."

The club added: "The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements uncompleted. Manchester City FC will now pursue the appeal avenues open to it, on the basis that the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe."

City's latest statement concluded: "We will continue to respect due process and are necessarily restricted in what we can say further until all proceedings are complete."
