Kitchen sinks can harbour more bacteria than a toilet seat, according to cleaning advice shared online. Food debris, meat juices and moisture create an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, and the sink is often overlooked during routine cleaning.
Expert's natural alternative to commercial products
Cleaning expert Courtney, who posts on Instagram as @courtney.onpurpose, has shared the natural product she uses to clean her sink. In a video caption, she wrote: "The typical commercial cleaning products are full of harmful fumes and chemicals that you are inhaling."
She added: "Honestly, I used to use and have tried all of them until I learned a safer and just as effective (may I say better) way." Her method involves Hypochlorous acid, which she describes as the "most underrated non-toxic disinfectant".
Cost and versatility
Hypochlorous acid is a reasonably affordable option, with 500ml of the disinfectant priced at £5.99 from HOCL. Courtney said: "It kills bacteria and viruses without any harsh chemicals, no fumes, and it is completely safe around your kids and pets."
The product is not limited to the kitchen sink — it can be used on worktops, cushions and scatter pillows. Some hypochlorous products can even be applied to the skin.
Step-by-step cleaning routine
Courtney has outlined her routine for cleaning the sink and drains. First, scrub with dish soap, then sprinkle baking soda and scrub or wipe before rinsing. Next, pour half a cup of citric acid and half a cup of baking soda down the drain with hot water and let it fizz. Finally, spray Hypochlorous acid, leave it for two minutes, then wipe and dry completely.
