Consumer champion Which? has shared a tip revealing that washing-up liquid, a common kitchen cleaning item found next to most sinks, has multiple uses around the home. In a popular social media post on Facebook and TikTok, Which? explained that the product can fix creaky doors and clean garden furniture, among other tasks.
Three alternative uses for washing-up liquid
The experts at Which? said: "Your washing-up liquid might be the most underrated cleaner in your home. It cuts through grease and grime on far more than just plates, and could save you from buying a load of separate cleaning products."
In the video, a Which? team member shared three everyday solutions for homeowners. "Did you know washing up liquid isn't just for dishes? Here's three alternative uses for it," they explained.
"Fix a creaky door by squirting a small amount onto your noisy hinge and moving the door back and forth a few times."

The video continued: "Freshen up your garden furniture. A regular scrub with washing up liquid and warm water will keep it looking spick and span. Clean your bathroom. A squirt of washing up liquid makes light work of cleaning bathtubs and sinks due to its grease-busting power."
Social media users were impressed by the video. Replying to the post on Facebook, a commenter wrote: "Great to use as a pre-wash stain remover or to quickly spot wash a stain, on a food stain. The Fairy dishwashing liquid lifts food stains, especially greasy ones."
Another comment said: "Washing-up liquid is surprisingly useful for grease and everyday grime, but it is worth matching it to the job. For example, it can help clean around hinges, but it is not really a lubricant, so a proper hinge lubricant is usually better if the goal is to stop squeaking."
Someone else replied: "It's a good ingredient for cleaning pine tables. Make a not-too-watery mix of: hot water, washing up liquid, bicarb of soda, white vinegar and olive oil; use a sponge to scrub down with the grain; wipe with a dry cloth, and finish with a mix of hot water and olive oil, then give a final wipe over with a dry cloth."
Elsewhere, on TikTok, a viewer shared: "It's the best stain remover, on a fresh stain washing up liquid will remove anything." Another comment said: "I do this already."
