A comparison of two washing machine cleaners found that the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner removed musty odours from the drum, while the Dettol Washing Machine Cleaner performed well on the detergent drawer but did not eliminate the smell.
Why the test was carried out
Washing machines are a breeding ground for bacteria, mould, and foul odours, despite being appliances built to clean possessions. The test was prompted by a lingering smell coming from the drum that soda crystals, typically used as a natural cleaner, could not remove.
The products tested were the Dettol Washing Machine Cleaner, priced at £2.99, and the Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner, priced at £2.19.
How the Dettol cleaner performed
To use the Dettol product, one tablespoon was diluted in 200ml of hot water to clean the detergent drawer, glass door, and seal. The mixture was fairly effective at removing hardened soap deposits and small areas of surface mould.
The drawer was then returned to the machine, and the remaining mixture was poured into it before running the appliance on a 60-degree wash cycle. After the cycle finished, the drum looked noticeably shinier, but the unpleasant odour remained when the door was opened.
How the Dr. Beckmann cleaner performed
For the Dr. Beckmann test, the full bottle was poured into the detergent compartment, as the drawer, seal, and door required no additional work. Although the guidance suggested running at least a 40-degree wash, a 60-degree programme was selected to ensure a proper comparison.
After the programme finished, opening the appliance door revealed a pleasing floral scent with no hint of staleness. When used consistently, this product is also intended to support energy-efficient washing and prolong the machine's lifespan.
Results and recommendation
The Dettol washing machine cleaner performed well on the drawer but was less effective on the drum. The Dr. Beckmann Service-it Washing Machine Cleaner is recommended for its exceptional results and affordability.
